Chris Birkett

Be Creative CoverMusic has been Chris’ lifelong passion. Born in London, his love affair with music began at 8 years old, when he built his first guitar, which became his very personal way to communicate feelings and emotions. At 14, he started playing concerts in London clubs. At 21, he was collaborating with well-known Memphis artists Rufus Thomas, Ann Peebles and King Floyd and at 23, he joined the then-famous pop group Love Affair, whose song “Everlasting Love” ruled the 1968 UK charts for many months. Then, spotted at an audition by producer Tony Visconti (David Bowie, the Moody Blues, T-Rex), Chris spent his next creative period being mentored by Tony Visconti and becoming a producer in his own right, working with artists such as Steve Earle, Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, Quincy Jones, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Sinead O’Connor, The Pogues, Alison Moyet, and Ali Amran.

Chris has stayed busy since re-locating to a Toronto studio three years ago. He still does plenty of production (recently co-producing Buffy Sainte-Marie’s new record, due in Spring 2015), but one listen to either his 2010 record Freedom or his latest release Be Creative and you’ll figure out pretty quickly this is not just a studio guy making records on the side. With A-list Canadian musical guests like guitarist Rik Emmet and Blue Rodeo drummer Glen Milchem lending a hand on the album, the songs come from a creative inferno, with all the style, edge and grit you’d expect from a lifetime staring into a musical soul reflected back from some of the leading lights of popular music.
